What is Cold Laser Therapy?

“Cold” in cold laser therapy does not mean the treatments are cold. Cold here means that the light used in cold laser therapy is not enough to heat your body’s tissues. The name is to distinguish it from other treatments that use lasers. This therapy is also known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).

A small, hand-held device is used to treat the area of your skin. Using low levels of light, cold laser therapy is used to help stimulate the healing process. During a session, a device about the size of a flashlight is used that emits different wavelengths of light. The lightwaves are typically between 600 and 700 nanometers (nm) or between 780 and 950 nm, depending on the degree of treatment required. Once the light emitted from the device passes through your skin, it is absorbed by the targeted cells.

The lightwaves are directed at a specific part of the body and the tissue absorbs the light. The light then causes a reaction which stimulates regeneration of the skin cells. These cells react in a way that will help with damage or injured tissue, reduce pain, inflammation, and edema, and speed up healing time by increasing the cells’ metabolism. The process is painless and you won’t feel any vibration or heat. Sessions last only a minute or two, again depending on the level of treatment.

Cold laser therapy has been in use for over four decades. It is a non-invasive procedure that does not require medications and there are no serious side effects. Here at Hyde Park Chiropractic Wellness Center in South Chicago, our trained cold laser therapists are experienced and knowledgeable and are ready to help and answer any questions you may have.

Reduces inflammation. Inflammation in the body is the source of much of our pain. Inflammation is the sign our body gives us to let us know something is wrong. It is often exhibited by redness, swelling, and pain. By investing in cold laser therapy, your body is encouraged to produce pain-relieving endorphins, as well as help repair connective tissues.

Helps with muscle strains and sprains. Muscle strains and sprains are a normal part of an active lifestyle. Still, they can take a while to heal. When you invest in cold laser therapy with Hyde Park Chiropractic Wellness Center in South Chicago, you are encouraging your body to speed up the healing process as the damaged cells are encouraged to heal faster.

This treatment is an effective way of treating a variety of issues, but should only be used under the direction of a physician or chiropractor. Because it is non-invasive, there isn’t any recovery time. For the best results, patients should expect between eight and 20 sessions.
